They are powerful, and evil – yet Claudia wants to know if that’s actually a universal truth. Are all witches really that bad? When a mysterious gift appears, dark secrets are cast into the light, and the world as she knows it may change forever. Now armed with questions, Claudia will need to figure out if it’s truly worth finding the truth when textbooks don’t hold all the answers. Being an avid fan of urban fantasy and all things paranormal I enjoyed this book quite a bit.

Author Katie Weill spins a very intricate web of magic, mystery and mayhem in her debut novel, Malefica. A world in which witches are deemed dangerous and life for a 18 yr old girl is about to change in unforeseen ways.

Author Katie Weill was very descriptive in her story telling and did a great job placing me right along with the characters. However, I felt as though parts of the story were either rushed or skipped over which at times left me a bit perplexed causing me to have to reread parts of the story because I thought I had missed something.

(Side note: No wine was consumed during the time that I read this book)

For example: Without giving too much away because I HATE spoilers…..It was vital to Claudia to find a certain item that belonged to her mother. This is why Luca and her risked their lives several times to get to the one person that could direct to them to this item. The build up from the author made it seem that not only was this item indispensable but that it would give her some insight to who her mother was. BUT, that all changed in a blink of an eye leaving me thinking, “Hold up, what the f*ck just happened?”.

I loved the characters…..especially Luca. But I wish that there had been more substance/development/structure when it came to the main characters  but I feel that this could have been done if the book was a little bit longer.  The potential for such a strong – send me into a bookaholic coma was almost there …….. Overall, I liked the concept of the story, I just wish that the story was a bit longer.

Katie was inspired by the hard fought findings of her Aunt, Ann Pudeator to create a story that started with a sprinkle of history and unraveled a tale from there. With her husband and her rescued dog at her side she is enthralled by the idea of creating new stories and worlds and looks forward to sharing them with the world. Ann Pudeator was exonerated in 1957 by the Massachusetts General Court of all charges.
